Arno Schuitemaker (Amsterdam) creates hyperphysical works that fuse dance and performance with influences from the visual arts. Collaborating closely with his team, he integrates light, music, scenography, voice, and video into seamless, sensorial performances where each element amplifies the others.

Choreography is a tool for radical reflection on the concerns of our (digital) age. His work insists on the body — and its politics. Engaging audiences physically, emotionally, and imaginatively, his performances transform into shared spaces where, above all, movement becomes felt, bringing us closer to each other than we think.

His creations have been presented at renowned festivals and theaters in over 25 countries. After After premiered during Julidans at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam in July 2024 and was named a Critic’s Choice in Theaterkrant. 30 appearances out of darkness was first presented by the Holland Festival in 2022 and was ranked among the 5 best performances of the season by de Volkskrant.

In October 2019, The Way You Sound Tonight was awarded the Zwaan, the most prestigious dance prize in Dutch performing arts. The jury stated: “The Way You Sound Tonight is one of those theater experiences you wish could last forever. Schuitemaker succeeds in getting everything perfectly right.”

Other creations include EXIT (2009), TIDE (2011), The Fifteen Project | DUET (2012), I is an Other (2014), Together_till the end (2015), WHILE WE STRIVE (2015), I will wait for you (2016), If You Could See Me Now (2017), and O S C A R (2021).

In Theatermaker, critics named 30 appearances out of darkness, The Way You Sound Tonight, and I will wait for you among the best performances of their respective seasons. tanz magazine selected Arno as one of the most promising artists in its 2017 yearbook, and Dance Europe described him as “one of the leading makers in The Netherlands.” He received the Dioraphte Encouragement Award and won the second jury prize at [re]connaissance for WHILE WE STRIVE.

SHARP/ArnoSchuitemaker receives multi-year funding from 2025 to 2028 by Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. Members of the board are Neeltje Holland (chair), Peter Kramer (treasurer), Stephanie ter Brake (secretary), Jan-Bert Vroege (general member). The board does not receive any fees.
