The Grid

The Grid is a performance at the intersection of choreography, installation, and electronic music. Sixteen moving light columns and a dancer engage in a hypnotic dialogue between human and machine. When the machine stops being a tool and becomes the environment we move within, where does its choreography end, and where does ours begin?

The work becomes a metaphor for the invisible grids that program us, often subtly: from algorithms that curate our lives to societal expectations that organise our behaviour. As movement threads its way through, the rigid framework begins to soften, rippling into waves; the space turns fluid, porous. The dancer makes this environment his own, opening up the possibility that even within programmed systems, freedom can emerge.

The performance version of The Grid was created in collaboration with audiovisual artists Victor Dissel and Bram van Ravenhorst. The installation is also presented as an autonomous work: a continuous audiovisual landscape.
